$10 mini-game plus controller sells 10 million

Posted: 20 Mar 2009 09:23 AM PDT

In addition to dominating February sales, Nintendo announced that Wii Play has sold 10 million copies in the U.S. alone, making it the best-selling game this generation.

"Wii Play mini-games are fun and they get people playing together," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller, that indicates that there are now more than 10 million people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes. When added to the 12.7 million Wii Remote controllers that have sold separately, this reinforces the growing 'social gaming' trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online."

Note to self: If I ever become a console manufacturer, be sure to bundle a mini-game with a second controller.

Watch out, Apple is gunning for the games market

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 10:34 AM PDT

Make no mistake about it. Apple opened up several features in the iPhone/iPod touch this afternoon, and many of them have cool applications for gaming. Related to Nintendo, is the DSi going to be enough?

In game voice chat is also one of the various APIs now open, as is iPod library access, proximity sensor, audio recorder, battery API, streaming audio and video, data detectors, text selection (oh??? is this for copy and paste??) UI alert view, sake API (for rumble) and GPS lingo. Gizmodo Live Blog

That shiny thing charging in its cradle on my desk right now is looking sexier every minute. Update: Oh, and EA is about to speak onstage too.

[Assumptions] So is Nintendo now being controlled by some type of interdimensional Aliens? Are these Aliens trying to harvest all the Nintendium© in the world while brainwashing people as slaves? Does the saying “Interdimensional ‘Bob’s game’ championship” mean a lot more than what was first let on in an earlier trailer? Hopefully when stage 100 rolls around Bobs website will hold all the answers.

Is the MotionPlus delay due to third party developers?

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 08:41 AM PDT

As you all know, Wii MotionPlus has been absent from the past two major Nintendo release schedules. Now, my first thought is this is Nintendo being Nintendo, always meticulously testing its first party products until they’re perfect (unless, of course, we’re talking Wii Music—I kid Miyamoto, I kid!).

However, hundreds, if not thousands, of people saw MotionPlus in real-time demos at E3 and elsewhere to close out 2008. The tech worked; the hardware appeared sound—especially in one of the more complicated implementations, 1:1 sword-fighting.

So, if the hardware is sound, perhaps it’s the software that’s the issue. No, not Wii Sports Resort. Third party software. There are a number of developers who’ve outright bragged that their game will support MotionPlus, and I imagine there are several more who have yet to speak up about it that nevertheless have games ready for deployment. And then there are those developers that have yet to sign on that are seeing this excitement in their peers and want in on the action, so to speak. Many publishers, like EA, are openly groevling at Nintendo’s feet these days (and have already pledged MotionPlus games), so there’s a bit more evidence there as well.

What Nintendo could be doing is something we wouldn’t have seen in an older, more arrogant 1990s Nintendo. Keep in mind they’ve said nothing official yet, so there’s no real “delay,” but the release schedule absence speaks for itself. Perhaps Nintendo is throwing developers a bone? Giving them a bit more time to get something together for the launch? With Wii Speak and the Balance Board fading from my memory faster than I’d like, this scenario would make a bit more sense than Nintendo going in alone. And yes, I realize that the Balance Board continues to be a moneymaker for Nintendo, regardless of my memory, but this MotionPlus scenario would mean even MORE money for the Big N, if that’s even possible.

And, of course, Wii Sports Resort will blow everything away anyway, so this hypothetical is really win-win for Nintendo.

Nintendo prevails in Wii patent lawsuit

Posted: 17 Mar 2009 12:22 AM PDT

REDMOND, Wash. — A U.S. District Court judge has summarily dismissed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Nintendo brought by Fenner Investments Ltd. Fenner had alleged that the Wii™ console and its controllers, as well as the Nintendo GameCube™, infringed on one of its patents (U.S. Patent No. 6,297,751). Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court in Tyler, Texas, dismissed the case on Monday, and ruled that there was no need for a jury trial.

"We are very pleased with the court's decision," said Rick Flamm, Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President, Legal & General Counsel. "Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We also vigorously defend patent lawsuits when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party's patent, despite the risks that this policy entails. Posted: 16 Mar 2009 05:23 PM PDT

If you happen to be a Club Nitnendo member with “Platinum” status, you might be receiving a special e-mail invite to test drive the Nintendo DSi. Who knows if this is happening all around the US, but I got and invite to a GameStop somewhere in NYC. You are encouraged to bring one of your favorite games to see how it plays on the system.

I’m more interested in the unique applications the DSi has like the animation studio and the functionality of the camera. I already prereserved my spot for the event, so if anyone wants to know anything about the DSi let me know in the comments! I’ll see what I can muster up.

Video game industry needs to grow up and act like a responsible adult

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 02:40 PM PDT

It’s about time the video game industry grew up and acted like a responsible adult.  I’m not talking about mature games.  It needs to be more like its older siblings, movies and music, when it comes to fulfilling the basic expectation of a weekly release day.  Record stores always have new releases on Tuesday, comic books come out on Wednesday, and movies typically come out every Friday.  We publish release dates on Infendo for games coming out “this week” rather than a specific day of the week because most games come out whenever the stores might receive them.  Not a lot of guess work involved for other types of entertainment, so why are video games different?

Game & Watch reviews are funny, profane

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 11:24 AM PDT

Over on SydLexia.com there is a pretty funny page of Game & Watch reviews.  Be forewarned, they swear almost as much as House Of The Dead: Overkill.

Favorite quote from the article about Octopus (pictured):  “The octopus in this game is actually a septopus. Maybe that’s why he’s such a dick.”

Nintendo Power convinced me to NOT buy Pokemon Platinum

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 06:52 AM PDT

I was really excited to get Pokemon Platinum, which would be my first entry into the series!  No offense to the Pokemon Nation out there, but Nintendo Power just convinced me not to buy the new edition that comes out next week.  In their description of Pokemon Platinum, the amount of details about the characters, the items they can hold, the different Formes they can take, and the ability to gain special Pokemon through incredibly convoluted means scared the crap out of me.

On one hand, the game sounds excellent and is so packed with features, any Pokemon fan should be frothing at the mouth to get their hands on this one.  On the other hand, the amount of characters and options in the game sounds incredibly overwhelming to me.

So convince me, Infendo Pokemon Pals … should a Pokemon novice like myself get Pokemon Platinum?

Wii-kly Update - BIT.TRIP BEAT & Summer Games II

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 06:41 AM PDT

Old-school action is the main attraction at the Wii Shop Channel this week. With a wealth of underground buzz already surrounding it, a brand new WiiWare title (BIT.TRIP BEAT) uses vintage-looking graphics and 8-bit sounds to create a rhythm-based game that's loaded with retro cool. Find out if you have enough skill to create order from chaos in a game that is as mesmerizing as it is challenging. Meanwhile, the latest addition to the Virtual Console lineup brings a Commodore 64 classic (Summer Games II) to the Wii console, proving that fans of international sports events needn't wait until 2012 to get their track-and-field fix. Even if you're too young to remember the original days of 8-bit gaming, these awesome titles provide timeless kicks.

This week's new games are:

WiiWare

BIT.TRIP BEAT (Aksys Games, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): BIT.TRIP BEAT is a rhythm game that brings retro action into the present, letting you use the motion-sensing Wii Remote controller to bounce beats. Retro visuals, classic game play, four-player multiplayer and an 8-bit soundtrack will get you in the zone and rock your world. The challenges are mighty, but if you can stay cool as the difficulty increases, you'll discover the beginnings of the BIT.TRIP saga.

Virtual Console

Summer Games II (Commodore 64, 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): A thousand athletes. A hundred countries. Billions watching around the world as you enter the stadium, marching confidently among your nation's strongest, fastest and boldest young men and women. Your gaze sweeps the crowd as you realize the scope of your achievement. You are about to compete against the world's best athletes in a 3,000-year-old competition. This is the pinnacle of athletic achievement: the Summer Games. Summer Games II challenges your competitive skills with a series of athletic contests for one to eight players. Experience the excitement and realism of eight different events: cycling, equestrian, fencing, high jump, javelin, kayaking, rowing and triple jump. Practice each event to sharpen your skills, then choose from the 18 countries you can represent in the competition.

Overheard at Infendo Headquarters: “I really do like our readers”

Posted: 16 Mar 2009 06:00 AM PDT

Last week, Infendo managing editor David Cole spoke oh so kindly of visitors to Infendo. “I really do like our readers,” he proudly said, in an unexpected email sent to staff. “It’s really nice to see some well thought out comments like this. This is definitely what makes Infendo unique.”

Without missing a bit, senior editor Jack Loftus quipped, “Yeah, then a non-contributing douche bag like [name withheld] mucks it all up. I wonder what it’s like to have no life whatsoever.”

I know I speak for everyone at Infendo when I say we love both kinds of readers. The former are more welcome, but we’ll take the good with the bad any day. Reader participation truly is Infendo’s biggest asset, so thanks for visiting—whether an intellectual, a fanboy, or even a troll.

Now I’m off to counting all this money Nintendo so generously decided to share with us. All in a day’s work.

Infendo Review - Dead Rising Chop till you Drop

Posted: 15 Mar 2009 02:25 PM PDT

Taking one scan through your local game retailer shows you just how many developers are deciding to make a quick and easy buck by simply porting an older title to the Wii. There's no doubt Capcom is this generation's game port king what with titles such as Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 0, Okami, and more hitting the system within the past two years. Their newest retooled title is none other than the Xbox 360's 2006 award winning Dead Rising. Does this port have what it takes to entertain newcomers yet keep returning fans pleased at the same time? Read our review.

(Note: I have not played the original Dead Rising for the Xbox 360. This review is unbiased towards any differences.)

_________

Pros

-Story

I was surprised to find a lengthy intertwined plot embedded between bouts of zombie slaying. The story is generic and clichéd at best, but flows near perfectly with the game. You play as photographer Frank West who is suddenly hurled into a cover up of a zombie outbreak in a small town's shopping mall. If timed right you should be able to finish Dead Rising in less than ten hours…not bad for a hack-and-slash.

-Gameplay

It wouldn't matter if you had ten zombies, or a thousand zombies to kill….it's just fun. The shear amount of items that can be used to kill the undead are scattered all throughout the shopping mall waiting to be wielded at anytime. A few memorable moments I experienced include me running ten zombies over with a shopping cart and proceeding to shank them with a gas powered post hole digger. Good times. To save development time and create an easier transition from 360 to Wii, Dead Rising is running on the old Resident Evil 4 engine for visuals, and game mechanics. Players familiar with RE4's third person shooting via remote IR will adapt nicely with the controls.

-Sound

Hearing zombies go "Arrrghhhblahhh", or "gloooyaahhhhhmph" for a few hours may sound dull (It is), but hilarious touches such as the splurting of guts via chainsaw help mix up the mood. Strolling through the mall while listening to casual elevator tunes enhances the comedic side of Dead Rising.

_____________

Cons

-Controls

Though not required to play (thank goodness) the motion controls in Dead Rising just plain suck. It feels like the developers finished porting the title and said "how about we make them swing the remote to swing the in-game baseball bat, but instead of 1:1 sensing we'll have a 2 second delay…woot!". Outside of lame tacked on waggle the IR shooting mechanic controls just fine, but please do me favor and press "A" instead of flailing around in front of your TV all day.

-Visuals

There was no denying the Wii adaptation of Dead Rising was going to have to be scaled down in the graphics department. After hearing the title was to use the beautiful Resident Evil 4 engine I expected a decent visual output similar to RE4. Wrong! It looks like I'm playing a cross between a N64 and a Gamecube title. While character models look fantastic everything else looks unfinished. Textures look extremely muddy up close, anti-aliasing is no where to be found, and the "colorful energetic" shopping mall looks boxed, bland, and unexciting. Loading times can be extremely annoying. In some instances you’ll be waiting ten seconds for a load, walk through a shop, and be prompted with another ten second load. I know a lot more could have been done in the graphics, and optimization department, but what can you expect from a third party developer these days, eh?

-Final Thoughts

To sum everything up in a sentence, Dead Rising: Chop till you Drop is a decent port. You'll be entertained with the open world zombie massacre element which will last for a few hours, but may wear thin quick depending on how you play. Priced at $39.99, Dead Rising Wii is a solid rent. Don't venture into a purchase until you see a 20, or 30 dollar deal.

______

Second Opinion: Sean Buckley

I didn’t hate it! That is to say, It’s not the same experience you’ll find on the 360, but it’s not bad. Yes, there are less Zombies, but the remaining zombies are more aggressive than in the 360 version. Navigating the horde is also more of a challenge, a result of the limited mobility of the “Resident Evil” control scheme.  A change that turned me off far more than the heavily touted “less zombies problem” was the lack of a timer - In the original game a clock was always counting down until the arrival of the helicopter, and you had to budget your time in order to complete all the story missions. While time budgeting was not fun, having story missions unlock relative to the clock rather than by completing a mission tree allowed you to skip some “save the survivor” escort missions if you found them boring or repetitive.  The Wii version seems to make it mandatory to rescue every single survivor - something I found frustrating and dull.

Echoing what other reviews have said, it’s Average, but fun. We’ve all seen the Wii perform better, and while the game has the familiar feel of Resident Evil 4, I can’t help but think that a custom built engine just for the Wii would have served Dead Rising better than an overhauled Gamecube Engine. The game retails for 39.00, 36 at Amazon - but it really belongs at $29,  next to Onechanbara and the other “budget” titles.  It’s fun,but it doesn’t feel  worth the big “four-oh.” Maybe thirty.

Review: 20 Years of Nintendo Power is abridged and entertaining history

Posted: 15 Mar 2009 05:00 AM PDT

20 Years of Nintendo Power
Scott Pelland can write. As a staff writer and later managing editor of Nintendo Power for 20 years (1987-2007), I can’t think of a better historian to tell “the history of Nintendo through the pages of the official magazine,” which is precisely what Pelland did in the special edition of 20 Years of Nintendo Power. After reading it, I’m convinced he’s the grandfather of Nintendo journalism.

The ad-free issue runs 65-pages, with construction-paper like thickness. The design is as clean as something you would expect from Apple and is brimming with photographic spreads of the magazine as an anchor to tell the story of Nintendo. All “the biggest moments” in the company’s history are here: from the NES to Wii, including significant first-party and third-party games. The writing is tighter in the first half than the second, but the overall result is succinct, insightful, balanced, and forward-thinking.

Though short, the issue is well worth $10, the price of six regular issues of the magazine. Perspective like this doesn’t come often to video games, so I recommend it to both collectors and gamers alike. The issue is on newsstands “until May 12, 2009.” I bought mine at Target.

EA Tiger Woods 10 with Wii MotionPlus: Here’s my money, take it

Joystiq has some demo footage of an EA rep going through the motions in the upcoming Tiger Woods PGA Tour golf title for the Wii. Stress motions. Joystiq came away impressed.

Basically, I can’t see myself playing a golf title on any other system going forward unless it has the kind of motion controls demonstrated here.

John McEnroe playable in Grand Slam Tennis

Posted: 12 Mar 2009 11:14 PM PDT

PRESS RELEASE — Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today that tennis legend John McEnroe will headline a roster of some of the sport's all-time greats to be featured in EA SPORTS™ Grand Slam® Tennis. An enigmatic personality both on and off the court, McEnroe will make his videogame debut in EA's new tennis franchise. The game is being developed under the EA SPORTS brand by EA Canada in Vancouver, B.C. It will be available first for the Wii™ and ships to North American retailers on June 16th, 2009.

"It's great that EA SPORTS has embraced tennis into its family of games. I think it's a solid sign the sport is thriving and I hope it will continue to generate more interest and excitement in tennis," said McEnroe. "Having Wimbledon exclusive to this game is huge because Wimbledon is such a special tournament, for the entire sport of tennis and for me personally."

One of the greatest tennis players of all-time, McEnroe won seven Grand Slams, including three at Wimbledon, and amassed 77 singles titles. He stopped playing singles on the main ATP tour at the end of 1992 but has remained heavily involved in tennis, playing on seniors tours and providing television commentary for a number of networks at the Grand Slams. McEnroe was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999. Off the court, he hosted his own talk show and written an autobiography, titled "You Cannot Be Serious", a phrase he made famous through his on-court outbursts during his career.

"Having a champion like John McEnroe exclusive to EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis reflects our commitment to deliver an authentic, entertaining, and deep representation of the sport like never before," said Dave McCarthy, Vice-President, EA SPORTS. "McEnroe's success, charisma and passion for tennis easily make him one of the most recognizable and colorful personalities, not just in tennis, but all sports."

Specifically designed for the Wii, EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis puts the racket in the palm of your hand and delivers the deepest tennis experience. Users will feel like they are actually playing tennis, performing real forehands and backhands in their living rooms. The game is one of the first to be compatible with Wii MotionPlus™, which enhances the one-to-one motion with added shot depth and precise ball placement.

EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis for the Wii has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI, and has an MSRP of $49.95. For more information, log onto www.easports.com/tennis. Media can find screenshots and video of the game at http://info.ea.com.

Awesome, that’s all I’ll say.

Nintendo speedlinking: Derek’s backlog edition

Posted: 12 Mar 2009 06:57 PM PDT

I’ve written a few stories for Kombo this week I thought may spark some interest and debate among you dedicated Infendo legions.

  • Majority of World at War Wii owners battle online
  • Capcom ‘won’t rule out’ stateside Tatsunoko release
  • Ubisoft shipping No More Heroes, Red Steel bundle
  • Nintendo is McDonald’s of video games, says analyst
  • Good ol’ fashioned Infendo speedlinking. What is this, 2007?

Does the hard-core gamer still matter?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2009 05:02 PM PDT

Out of the top 20 selling games of 2008, less than half of them fit the profile of what type of game this MSNBC article considers appealing to the hard-core or serious gamer.  So I think the question shouldn’t be “can the Wii win back the hard-core gamer,” but rather “does the hard-core gamer still matter?”

The article goes on to say that Nintendo’s original ‘core gamers’ who grew up on Super Mario Bros are disappointed in games like Wii Sports Resort, but I think high sales of games like Mario Kart and Guitar Hero prove that the core audience is shifting to less mature titles.

Do you think violent/mature game fans should still be considered core gamers?

SouthPeak releases Roogoo box art, screens

    Posted: 12 Mar 2009 03:11 PM PDT

SouthPeak Games today released screens and official box art for its upcoming Roogoo games for Nintendo platforms — Twisted Towers on Wii and Attack! on Nintendo DS. Both are due to release this year.

Developed by SpiderMonk Entertainment, Roogoo first appeared last June as a $10.00 downloadable Xbox Live Arcade and Windows title. A simple puzzle game, the objective of Roogoo is to guide various falling shapes through matching holes in a series of rotating disks.

Twisted Towers offers a cooperative multiplayer mode throughout the entire game, and Attack! features single and multi-card multiplayer on the Nintendo DS. Both games are based on the original Roogoo.

Twisted Towers and Attack! feature wireless Wii-to-DS connectivity, allowing players to unlock additional levels in each of the versions.

Monster Hunter G online to cost monthly in Japan

    Posted: 12 Mar 2009 02:30 PM PDT

Famitsu's live blog has reported that the highly popular Monster Hunter G’s online features will require a monthly subscription in Japan. Capcom will charge 800 points for one month, 1500 for two months, and 2000 for three months. Famitsu is naming the monthly purchase a “hunting ticket”. At this time it is unknown if Monster Hunter 3 will support an online fee.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Japan would pay even more than $8 a month just to play some Monster Hunter. It’s like drugs for them. Monster Hunter G probably won't be released outside of Japan, but if so would you pay a monthly fee considering the title was built from the ground up for defeating monsters and quests with friends online? I know I would…I think.

Monster Hunter G will be released in Japan on April 23rd, 2009 and includes a demo of Monster Hunter 3.

Puzzle Quest goes deep in space with Galactrix

    Posted: 12 Mar 2009 09:02 AM PDT

I had Puzzle Quest: Galactrix in my DS for a few hours this week and came away impressed.  As a fan of the first Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords for DS, the news that they were putting out “Puzzle Quest in space” got me salivating.  Galactrix is again an addicting game, but the story and world are much deeper than that in Challenge of the Warlords.  Characters have much more dialog than before and it’s mostly well written.  The universe you fly around in is much larger than the map from Warlords.  Even from the few hours I played, there was talk of aquiring more crew members (I already have four) and additional ships.  Along with this depth, there are additional load times which became a little frustrating, but actually gives you a break to stretch your stylus cramped hand.  Puzzle battles are basically the same, but using a Hexic style game instead of the Bejewled type of game from the first Puzzle Quest.

While it’s a relief that Galactrix isn’t just Warlords coated in sci-fi, it has a much bigger focus on the adventure and story.  This was slightly off-putting for me since the first one was more a matter of wandering around and battling without too much thought about who or why you were battling.  That said, it’s an excellent game and well worth checking out if you’re into puzzles or RPGs.

    Nintendo DS “ships” 100 million

    Posted: 11 Mar 2009 07:42 AM PDT

I’m loathe to publish news about companies “shipping” hardware to retailers, but 100 million is 100 million, and the DS has, apparently, shipped just that.

Even more important however, since content is king, is that 83 DS titles have broached the 1 million mark.

I don’t doubt that the actual “sold” numbers for the DS will in fact be 100 million sometime soon. Congrats.

Sega, PlatinumGames discover strange new formula for creating great 3rd party game on the Wii

    Posted: 11 Mar 2009 04:27 AM PDT

Is this the beginning, or the end? Has Sega risen from the ashes of its hedgehog-on-human kissing scenes? Has PlatinumGames unlocked the much sought-after “mature third party game that works on the Wii?”

Who knows. All I know is that the mags and rags are gushing over MadWorld right now. The art style works. The violence connects. A third party game has clicked. It’s not the first, but this one, especially, had a pretty big wave of hype driving it forward.

    Now, will it sell? ;-)

Play on Wii: Metroid Prime Brief Hands on Impression

    Posted: 10 Mar 2009 02:00 PM PDT

Recently Wired Blog got the chance to take a shot at the “Play On Wii” version of Metroid Prime, and they have noticed a few changes. Changes that would be considered improvements by some, and most of these enhancements were implemented in Metroid Prime 3. You can view a summary of all of the changes after the jump.

    • The Wii version features wide screen display
    • Point-and-shoot controls.
    • You can Lock on to an enemy or lock onto an area and free aim at the enemy.
    • You turn around by moving the aiming reticule towards the edge of the screen
    • Selecting visors and beams is done by holding the plus and minus buttons to bring up a menu.
    • You can earn badges for completing certain tasks, like defeating the Parasite Queen or escaping the first level.
    • These can be redeemed for bonus content - art galleries, music, “Fusion Suit”.
    • There is voice acting in the form of narration for sequences which include the introduction of Samus Aran.
    • “Game Screen shot Tool” in the bonus content options which was available in Metroid Prime 3.

According to Wired’s impression list, they seemed to have taken everything that made Metroid Prime 3 great and just tacked it on to the first one, and after reading their impression I can honestly say that I am excited for this game.

I know some of you have already played and beaten Metroid Prime, but is anyone curious to how the first one would play with the motion controls? Would you play through the game again? Even if you just rented it to feel the controls? Finally, I would like to know if anyone was disappointed by Metroid Prime 3 and the games motion controls?

Atlus - 101-1 Mega Mix for the DS

    Posted: 10 Mar 2009 12:28 PM PDT

101-in-1 Explosive Megamix is a game on the DS that apparently has 101 unique and interesting mini games that are centered around the use of the DS touch screen. On top of all this, players can challenge a friend to multiplayer competition through local wireless (that doesn’t mean WiFi) play. The game is slated for an April 2009 release. With a 101-in-1 games to try out there has to be a game someone would like… right?

Activision to release “more original” Wii games this year

    Posted: 10 Mar 2009 10:44 AM PDT

Activision’s CEO is sorry he didn’t bet big on Wii. Join the club, buddy. The company has still made a grundle selling Guitar Hero games on Wii, the most of any other console, but it’s obvious that treating the console as gaming ugly’s stepchild wasn’t the brightest strategy in hindsight. In an interview with Reuters this week, the bosshog said:

In the past we approached the Wii as an extension of what we were doing on PlayStation and the Xbox, and I think we can do a better job of creating original content for the Wii, and I think you’ll see more of that this year.

Hopefully “original Wii content” isn’t insipid budget games.

NDS Game Selector Switches it Up!

    Posted: 09 Mar 2009 06:22 PM PDT

One of the faults of portable gaming is variety - if you want to play more than one game while you are out, you have to carry around extra cartridges - and risk losing them.  It’s no surprise then, to see the market flooded with cases of all colors, shapes, and sizes that help you keep your handheld and your games together - but Hong Kong Company BlazePro take DS cases a step further with the “Game Selector.” Encasing your DS in a plastic black enclosure, the “NDS Game Selector” plugs three DS cards into your console via switch and cable, allowing you to choose which one is sending it’s data to the DS.  At first I wasn’t sure if this was awesome or pointless, but it could definitely save Animal Crossing addicts the hassle of constantly switching cartridges.  A neat idea, and an inexpensive solution if you  have cartridge-switching woes.

Datel “Old Skool” Retro Controller Review

    Posted: 06 Mar 2009 09:20 PM PST

Last summer, Datel released a retro styled classic controller in Japan, based off of the Famicom controller of the 1980s.  Holding the same form factor as an NES controller, yet equipped with X, Y, and shoulder buttons of the SNES controller it was something Wii owners had been waiting for - a classic controller from the era their Virtual Console games.  The new game-pad made it’s way to North America last month branded as the “Old Skool Retro Controller,” and if you can find it, it’s an excellent compliment to the official classic controller - but no replacement.

The Datel “Old Skool” feels light in the hand, but solid.  The D-pad and buttons give a nostalgic click when pressed, rendering a sensation very similar to how a new NES pad must have felt.  The “start” and “select” buttons representative of the Classic Controller’s “plus” and “minus” buttons retain the soft texture of the NES start/select buttons - a texture that is mirrored in the controllers “home” and “turbo” buttons.  The top of the controller features L and R buttons, molded into the contour of the game-pad itself - both of which are quite responsive, but a little uncomfortable compared to the round contours of the SNES pad or official classic controller.

Overall, the controller just feels right.  It’s form factor gives it that “retro feel” of an NES pad and the button layout makes it a suitable replacement for an SNES controller - as long as you don’t need to make excessive use of the L and R buttons.  The controller has a two speed turbo mode that, when activated, applies the turbo setting to every button at once - which can leave you stuck with turbo jumping when all you wanted was turbo attack.  It looks right, it feels right, the controller wire is black and it comes out of the top - it works with Wiiware games such as Megaman 9 and Tetris Party - really, there is almost nothing to complain about - but the one thing that could improve this controller would also undo everything it is.

The thing that keeps this controller truly “retro,” also remains it’s biggest fault - the lack of analog sticks.  Without them, it falls short of it’s packaging, which calls it “ideal for games downloaded from the Wii Virtual Console.”  The ideal falls short withotu analog, leaving the pad unable to play N64 titles - but the inclusion of analog sticks would destroy the retro feel that makes the controller so perfect for NES, SNES, Genesis, and Turbo Graphix 16 games.  The absence of analog also leaves the “Old Skool” unable to navigate the Wii menu without the aide of the Wii Remote IR pointer, costing the user some convenience.

All in all, if you are big on Virtual Console games, the “Old School Retro Controller” is a great compliment to the official classic controller, and a preferable alternative for most NES and SNES titles.  If you can only afford one Classic controller, stick with the official pad, the Nyko Wing, or perhaps Datel’s own wireless alternative - but if you’re considering picking up a spare for the occasional player two - or just want that retro feel, you can’t go wrong with Datel’s “Old Skool Retro Controller.”

The Datel Old Skool Retro Controller can be found at CodeJunkies, Amazon Japan, or ebay.

Gamefly goes Tangible with G-BOX Rentals

    Posted: 06 Mar 2009 12:40 PM PST

Gamefly continues it’s tradition of human interaction free game rental with the Gamefly G-BOX. Similar to DVD rental machines found in grocery stores, the G-Box allows customers to rent video games on a day-to-day basis for a small fee - 1.99 per day for Wii games 2.49 per day for Xbox 360 and Ps3 games. The first G-BOX was installed in Texas Tech University’s Barnes & Noble campus book store last week, and the company plans to install similar units nationwide. Hopefully these vending machines won’t be limited to college campuses, but John Creed, manager of the Texas Tech store suggested that Gamefly had specifically been working with Barnes & Nobel campus bookstores to reach the college gamer.

Like Gamefly’s online counterpart, the G-BOX will allow customers to keep their rentals as long as they want without due dates or late fees, presumably recurring the daily rental fee until the item is returned. The G-BOX will also feature a rent-to-own pay structure, allowing customers to keep the games they enjoy the most.

Edge magazine 200th issue cover campaign has to be expensive

To celebrate its 200th issue, the venerable Edge magazine is sending out 200 different covers to newsstands next week. That’s impressive in and of itself, and probably somewhat pricey, but the real reason I post today is all of the Nintendo characters and games that are represented here. Actraiser. Link. The Final Fantasy 3 (U.S.) characters. And of course, all the rest like Wolfenstein (PC) and WiiWare newcomer LostWinds. Pick your favorite from the image, won’t you? Can yo identify all 200?

Pelloni (Bob) tells Infendo about hype, SDK

    Posted: 06 Mar 2009 06:30 AM PST

We’ve written a lot about “bob’s game” in the past - covering protests, threats, forfeits, revivals, and zany antics - but never dug beneath the surface of Robert Pelloni’s masquerade of hype.  What exactly has Pelloni been up to?  Reader speculation ranges from a carefully designed marketing campaign to an insane, self-absorbed brat with an overblown sense of entitlement - but neither is exactly true.  It’s hard to pinpoint where the reality of where “bob’s game” ends and where the fantasy hype machine begins.  I contacted Pelloni privately to find out, and what I found added context and sanity to the entire ordeal.

For those of you not up to speed, Robert Pelloni is the sole developer of “bob’s game,” an independent retail-length adventure game for the Nintendo DS.  And independent is an understatement - bob’s game was introduced without a publisher, without official developer, and without Nintendo’s license - all hurdles Pelloni vowed to overcome, confident that “bob’s game” would see retail release.  According to his website, Nintendo rejected his application for developer status - but in the midst of our dialogue, Pelloni suggested otherwise.

Until recently, the “bob’s game” website featured an ongoing drama - the story of a passionate developer driven to madness, obsessed with waging war against an unfeeling corporation.  On the surface this personation showed a desperate and stubborn man, upset he didn’t get his way - but a more discerning eye uncovered a clever and somewhat immersive hype campaign.  Nearly every update to “bob’s game” drama correlated with an element of the storyline revealed in the game’s trailers.  Robert told me a little about what inspired him to take the promotion of “bob’s game” in this direction.

…there’s more going on here than what meets the eye, it’s great to hear from people that are able to read into it. I’m trying to do something the gaming world has been missing for years, the dropping of hints that make people speculate.  I think a lot of people have become accustomed to having commercials shoved in their face, and the real product is almost always a letdown compared to those exaggerations. The truth is that truly great games were always hidden until release. The Old Nintendo kept every game completely under wraps. That was half of the excitement!

And it certainly has been exciting - the entire “bob’s game” circus has been a ride of ups, downs, and surprises.  Followers have responded in curiosity and excitement, loathing and anger - Pelloni got exactly what he wanted, people were talking about “bob’s game.” The most recent events of the immersive  story saw our hero (villain?) swearing revenge on Nintendo for denying him the SDK (software development kit) he required to complete his game.  It seemed the quest for official retail release was over, but perhaps not - after all, the man himself said there was more here than meets the eye:

I’ve been leading people to believe one thing, while providing the details for the real story. The latest video explains everything that’s occurred up until this point, if you think about it.

I publicly showed a demo video, calling for publishers. I was contacted by twelve!
However- for some reason “bob’s game” can’t be published. They couldn’t clear me an SDK.
So I publicly begged for an SDK, and mentioned a meeting…
I went to the Nintendo World Store, which has quite a lot more meaning behind it than people realize!

    (emphasis added)

Pelloni didn’t come out and say it, but his phrasing suggests that he has already acquired his long sought after SDK, or otherwise obtained something else of great meaning at the Nintendo World Store.  Nintendo requires that development materials be kept in a secure non residential location, and the Nintendo World Store certainly qualifies as such a location, but in the end Pelloni’s remarks are as vague as ever - and open to interpretation.

So what’s going on with Bob?  Less crazy, more clever marketing.  Whether you are sick to death of “bob’s game” or sitting on the edge of your seat, the adventure is almost over.  Day 100 is fast approaching, and I for one am looking forward to hearing the final word on the fate of “bob’s game.”

An early look at Nintendo’s next generation console

    Posted: 05 Mar 2009 07:56 AM PST

The weekly GameIndustry.biz newsletter that arrived in my inbox this morning was all about the future of the TV, and how its hyper-connected online future relates to gaming as a whole (widgets, streaming, the cloud, oh my!). It was a fascinating read, but I couldn’t help but think about Nintendo the whole time.

Why? Well, because, at least with the Wii (and with the new DSi), Nintendo seems dead-set on making the console converge with the television. “Channels” were only the very basic beginning. In Japan, the next steps, while still basic and crude, are already happening with TV network partnerships and cable guides. It’s all a bit primitive now, but I can see the lattice coalescing before my eyes, and I have no doubt that with its incredible install base, powerful brand, and mainstream acceptance, Nintendo and the true Wii 2.0 will be an incredibly connected online beast for the masses. What we see now is simply the fish growing legs and struggling to crawl up the beach.

Obviously both Sony and Microsoft have pretty connected little consoles themselves, and I don’t doubt that online is the dominant part of their long term strategies (bye-bye physical media!). However, while we can’t write them off, nor should we, I believe it’s Nintendo that is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the coming and inevitable TV paradigm shift. Conveniently for Nintendo, tomorrow’s online TVs won’t have much of an appetite for memory-eating, bandwidth-hogging HD titles. They also won’t be the realm of the technophile or audiophile, because for any such technology of system to survive, it’s going to need more than a niche audience.

These won’t be videogames in the sense that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 play them, of course. Intelligent television devices will be thin clients, heavily reliant on the network for their content. At best, we’re probably talking about TVs which are capable of executing some form of scripted content like Macromedia’s Flash or Microsoft’s Silverlight - perhaps a restricted form of Java, at a push. Rich, graphically intensive games will remain the domain of dedicated console devices.

However, if the past three or four years have taught the videogames industry anything, it’s that not every consumer necessarily wants or needs their entertainment to look like Gears of War or Killzone 2. The Wii and the DS, and latterly the iPhone, have shown that low-tech “disruptive” devices can make significant strides in the market, challenging game creators to rethink their perception of how games work in order to wring great experiences from systems whose abilities are far from cutting edge.

Think about it. Nintendo’s strategy, while incredibly disruptive, and responsible for creating and cultivating millions of new interactive entertainment lovers (Nintendo would say it’s the company literally keeping the industry recession-proof at the moment), was a fairly obvious one. They wore their intentions proudly on their sleeves, hidden from no one, even though at first their aspirations drew a fair share of snickers, spite and hatred from the peanut gallery press. They wanted to reach the un-reachable, entice back veteran 1980’s gamers, and even pick off a few of those more passionate game-playing aficionados along the way. They wanted to show that the market (the consumers) were, mostly, tired of the arms race. Tired of technical specs leading press release, burying everything else. Tired of consoles that were, while pretty to look at, lacked the kind of substance necessary to make consoles profitable. And so far Nintendo has done this and more.

What’s the next logical step? Not a console, necessarily, but a delivery system. An “experience.” I imagine it could look a lot like the Wii Home screen, with all those little channels we both love and hate. I very much doubt Nintendo did not know what it was doing when it set up this interface the way it did. As they did with the Wiimote, Nintendo sought to infiltrate the home with something approachable and familiar. Hence, Channels, remotes and pointers. Intuitiveness. Their UI needs no instruction book (although understanding Friend Codes might).

But as GameIndustry notes, the hurdle for this “next generation” of gaming, sorry interactive entertainment, is not a technological one (many cutting edge TVs today have ethernet ports, etc). It’s a commercial one, and it’s a problem you can see in real-time today with the likes of Hulu, online network TV streaming, and Netflix. Cable companies, et al, are hesitant to provide online content, and this new games hub, provided via your TV, will be no exception.

So I guess the idea of a next generation Nintendo “console,” beyond the Wii, is a bit of a misnomer. The Wii has legs, just as its low-powered no frills NES forefather did, and I see it lasting well into the next decade. This is thanks in part to the shot-in-the-arm provided by MotionPlus, and also thanks to the DSi-style “pseudo-refreshes” that are sure to come to the system too. But after that, as TVs change into something glorious (”Permanently hooked into your high speed internet line, it will be a media streaming device, a content aggregator, an application platform” says GI.biz), I predict Nintendo will already have partnerships and services in place to meet them. It’s already happening in Japan, and by that time the Wii could very well be the best-selling console of all time.

The Balance Board will still only have one game worth playing, of course, but that’s a given.

Nintendo grants wishes - Punch-Out Wii to offer NES control

    Posted: 04 Mar 2009 01:34 PM PST

Nintendo revealed a little bit more about Punch-Out for Wii:

The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways.

I’d like to think my clout as a blogger forced Nintendo to include this option, but it’s more likely they did it because it just makes sense.

I’ve got your Wii ‘graphical wonder’ right here

    Posted: 04 Mar 2009 12:09 PM PST

Wherein I address one of Infendo’s senior commenters in the post headline– a first!

Anyway, we’ve been talking about graphics and shovelware here at Infendo lately (both staffers and commenters, because you’re awesome), and these new screens from the upcoming Boy and His Blob update are pretty remarkable. “Graphical wonders” even, in a hat tip to one of our regulars, and they’re coming to the Wii soon.

Seriously, I hope these look even just half as good in motion as they do on the physical page, because they’re pretty sharp. More below, including a few that show the blob doing what it does best: Being used and abused by his pipsqueak master in whatever way the situation calls for.

More over at Wired. Simply beautiful. However, I anticipate the game play to be as maddening in the new version as it was in the NES original. Seems only fair.

    Unsold shovelware can’t hurt you

    Posted: 04 Mar 2009 10:32 AM PST

Funny how some gamers get worked up over shovelware.

Have they forgotten about console lockout chips which limit the damage? Or trustworthy recommendations to help navigate the murky waters? And is there some video game Boogie Man I’m not aware of, forcing players to buy terrible games against their will?

On the surface, I can understand the concern. The Wii is home to more poorly-received games than other modern system, according to Metacritic. That can complicate the process of finding good games on Wii. But it’s not as bad as it was in the early ’80s, and there are modern tools to ensure you can avoid the stinkers.

To be clear, I don’t sympathize with game makers hoping to make a quick buck on cheap software. I despise them in fact. But I have rarely (if ever) gotten burned by said software. Here’s why:

Console control. You think the Wii is riddled with crappy games? The Atari 2600 was worse. Way worse. The majority of VCS games were so bad in the early ’80s that players wrote off video games entirely, causing the great crash of 1983.

Realizing this, Nintendo launched the NES in 1985 with lockout chips, so that the company could control, to a certain degree, the quality of games and their release frequency. Without Nintendo’s blessing, publishers couldn’t release a game. This instituted a layer of control to the approval process that hadn’t existed, one that continues today.

The system isn’t perfect. Shovelware can and does still exist. But its saturation today is nowhere near the levels experienced by Atari, thanks to closed consoles. I guess the “Official Nintendo Seal” has meaning afterall.

Critical and user reviews. Don’t listen to jaded or otherwise threatened gamers. The Wii has dozens of delightful games. You just have to separate the wheat from the chaff. To do this, it’s important to research a game before buying. Scanning dependable reviews, listening to online chatter, and talking with friends who share a similar taste in games are vital to your efforts.

Doing your homework, even if only for a few minutes, will ensure you find the games you can trust, as opposed to getting stuck with a stinker. Knowledge is power.

Freedom of choice. Bad games can’t hurt you unless you buy them. End of story. The above two items help avoid disaster. Regardless, you ultimately and freely decide what you want to play. No one is forcing you to buy anything. If a game looks suspect, or you’ve never heard of the publisher of developer listed on the back, skip it (or consult the reviews first). If it’s on sale for $10 and appeals to you, what’s there to lose?

The key is to focus your efforts on expensive games that can either leave a hole in your pocket or provide hours of fun. By staying smart, you can avoid the former while extending your gaming dollar.

Granted, occasional gamers like your uncoordinated uncle are more likely to get duped into buying a crap game, because they spend on a whim or don’t keep their ear to the grindstone like enthusiast gamers do. The price you pay for being out of the loop. But shovelware is not a problem so long as there are good games to be found. It can’t hurt you unless you let it.

So I’m pretty stoked for Grand Slam Tennis

After reading the Nintendo Power JPG teaser today, I’m excited for this Wii timed exclusive. GameCube tech demo does things Wii can’t

    Posted: 03 Mar 2009 01:16 PM PST

Countless developers have cited the system’s inherent weaknesses, rather than their own effort, as the catalyst for poor Wii graphics.

When footage like this comes along, one can’t help but wonder.

Mined by the folks at Unseen 64, this tech demo was used in a May 2001 software development kit for the Nintendo GameCube. It hosts a virtual tour of eight rooms in Princess Peach’s Castle, each of which showcases an effect or feature possible with GameCube hardware.

Room two, for example, features large textures and mipmaps. Room three uses a massive spiral staircase to highlight specular, bump and shadow mapping. Antialiasing, texture projection, local lighting and more then-advanced graphics features are also showcased.

Features, I might add, you’re to believe Wii just can’t handle.

Of course, no reasonable human being expects Wii software to be as beautiful as BioShock or stunning as Mirror’s Edge. No one should be dissuaded from embracing Wii simply because some of its games could very well be mistaken for high-end Nintendo 64 software.

But when footage like this comes along, it reinforces the argument disappointed Wii owners have echoed for years, their plates filled with stale-looking, under-cooked development efforts priced for profit.

Why shouldn’t Wii games be pretty, too?

Bonny graphics, as our Scottish brethren might describe them, and innovative gameplay aren’t repellent features. They’re not oil and water, and it’s perfectly reasonable to expect both when dropping a Grant on a Wii game.

Particularly when a near decade-old piece of hardware was capable of just as much.

To argue otherwise, or say Wii gamers should expect and accept ugliness from their system, is self-defeating and serves only to promote the efforts of apparently effortless developers who, for example, cannot manage to get a certain Wii zombie game to look as good as a four-year-old zombie game on GameCube.

When footage like this comes along, it serves as a reminder of the truth behind Wii software. You buy the system. You buy the games. You should have the best of both worlds.

    Disagree? Explain the twist.

They decided to play video games to raise money for Penny-Arcades Child’s Play charity. Check out their site and be sure to root them on as they take on a series of games ranging from the NES all the way up to the Gamecube.

Wii-kly Update - Family & Friends Party and Ogre Battle

    Posted: 02 Mar 2009 05:41 AM PST

This week’s new games are WiiWare title Family & Friends Party and the SNES game Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen.  Head past the break for full details.

[Press Release]  In like a lamb and out like a lion, or vice-versa? Whether March finds you digging out from a late-winter blizzard or reeling in the spring thaw, the fun is both mild and wild at the Wii Shop Channel. Even the littlest lambs in your household can take part in a cool new family-friendly WiiWare game, while strategy-loving gamers will be roaring like lions as they battle evil foes in a classic Virtual Console title.

    WiiWare

Family & Friends Party (Gammick Entertainment, 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Have fun with all your friends and family as you take on some very exciting challenges. This is an interactive board game for as many as eight players of all ages. The goal is to be the first to complete a series of challenges. During each turn, a challenge will be played by one or two players per team depending on the type of challenge you've been given. (Other players on your team can still help and support you). There are six different "Single" challenges that must be played cooperatively by members of the same team. Family & Friends Party can also suggest "Versus" challenges, which must be played competitively by all teams at the same time.

    Virtual Console

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen (Super NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): It's up to you to defeat the Empire. It's been nearly a quarter of a century since the Zetegenian Empire first conquered the Kingdoms of Zenobia with a wrath of fear and bloodshed. You are the leader of a band of rebels who've fought to preserve the last shred of honor in this desperate time of treachery. Manage the ranks of a full-blown rebel army, complete with hundreds of characters, magic items, weapons and mystical Tarot cards. You must succeed in ousting the evil usurpers—your fate, and that of the entire population, depends on it.

Rant - Wii Balance Board support…wha?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2009 07:26 PM PST

Just a quick thought that I ignited earlier today…Where the snap are the Wii Balance Board titles?! Let me rephrase that…Where the snap are the GOOD Wii Balance Board titles? As we approach the feet-laden peripheral’s one year anniversary (May) you might begin to wonder, like I did, why we haven’t seen all that strong developer support “promised” by Nintendo. Sure, you have your top-tier Wii Fit, Raving Rabbids, Skate It, and the likes, but did these really uphold the ninety buck-a-roos you slapped down for this digital weight scale? I begin to worry the big N might of gotten a little ahead of itself when releasing white plastic accessories. But all is forgotten when you see the sales top a whopping 16.3 million copies sold worldwide.

These ideas were spawned from an article I read this morning that questions whether or not Nintendo’s upcoming Wii MotionPlus will steal the balance board’s thunder.

Will it? Should it? Do you even give a care? Comment!

For the love of Lord Stanley, someone stop him

My friend Sidney Crosby Andy Marino is the king of NHL ‘09.

I watched in disbelief as he went undefeated last weekend against some of the best NHL ‘09 players I know. Marino stifled offensive juggernauts and danced through the neutral zone against defensive monsters, putting the puck in their nets with stunning frequency.

He talks a lot of trash, too. As much as I hate to do this here, there must be someone out there who can topple this beast. Right?

His weapon is the 360. His gamertag is Swiggins. Do it.

I can’t wait to replay Metroid Prime on Wii

    Posted: 28 Feb 2009 02:53 PM PST

Watching the comparison video of Metroid Prime on GameCube versus Wii got me excited to play it again. I prefer the controls of Metroid Prime 3 to the original, but I like the story and level progression of the original over 3, so I’m pretty excited for the new play control version to come to the States. Anyone else?

Big Bang Mini sequel coming to Wii in 2010

    Posted: 28 Feb 2009 01:38 PM PST

We absolutely loved Big Bang Mini at Infendo. We gave it our highest recommendation, and we’re thrilled to report a sequel is in the works.

Only this time, the fireworks are coming to Wii.

According to N-Sider, another Big Bang Mini game is in development for a 2010 Wii release. Like the DS original, the Wii version is being developed by Arkedo and will be published by SouthPeak Games.

Arkedo president Camille Guermonprez says the team is trying “some clever tricks” to adapt Big Bang Mini for a new audience on Wii.

“Say you are a father playing by yourself a nice level of the solo Arcade mode. Your four-year-old daughter comes in and wants to join,” postulates Guermonprez. “What’s her mood today? Does she want to help you fight the baddies, or does she want to have fun tickling them so they can get crazy and annoy you more?”

The Wii version is planned to revisit five worlds from the original and have a stronger focus on multiplayer. N-Sider called it an “extended and redesigned” version of Big Bang Mini; it is unclear whether the Wii game is an all-new sequel or simply a revision of the original.

The original Big Bang Mini released Jan. 21 for the Nintendo DS in North America. No date has yet been given for the Wii version.

THQ’s de Blob sells more than 700K worldwide

    Posted: 28 Feb 2009 12:32 PM PST

If the sticky, color-spewing de Blob were to splatter paint upon the THQ offices, he would color them green.

A pale, cash-like shade, that is.

CEO Brian Farrell said Tuesday his company’s colorful Wii platformer has sold more than 700,000 copies worldwide to date.

The game’s success has enabled THQ to keep de Blob at its original price point. After five months at retail, de Blob still sells for $49.99.

“We can make money on games like that,” said Farrell.

Farrell also said THQ is pursuing a “three-prong” strategy for Wii, including publishing “Nintendo-esque” games with high production value like de Blob, budget titles like the million-selling Big Beach Sports and licensed software such as its Nickelodeon portfolio.

“The competition on the Wii right now is from Nintendo. That’s what we’ve got to attack,” said Farrell. “The people who buy Nintendo games, (we want to) get them to buy things like de Blob.”

de Blob released to mostly favorable reviews last September in North America, Europe and Australia. It splattered Japan two months later.

Selling R4 carts illegal, says Japanese court

    Posted: 28 Feb 2009 11:38 AM PST

    Nintendo gets what Nintendo wants.

The Tokyo District Court granted an injunction yesterday against sales of the R4 DS cartridge in Japan.

The original lawsuit was filed last July, when Nintendo and 54 game companies, including Capcom, Square Enix, SEGA and more, pushed for the cease of marketing, sales and importation of the Chinese-made cartridges.

Nintendo had expressed an interest in the cart in Nov. 2007, when a spokesman said the company is “keeping a close eye on the products and studying them.”

The “R4 Revolution for DS” cartridge is a hollow shell that fits into the Nintendo DS cartridge slot. By placing data onto a Micro SD card and placing it inside the R4 cart, gamers can play pirated and homebrew software on their Nintendo DS systems.

R4 is advertised in some Japanese stores with signs stating “New R4 shipment has finally arrived! You know what it does! Absolutely no questions will be answered concerning this product” and “Guaranteed for one week only! Of course, we can’t explain what the R4 will do.”

Artist makes Shy Guy creepy yet sympathetic

On Monday, concept artist Winona Nelson posted this realistic take on the NES classic Super Mario Bros. 2 on the art blog Gorilla Artfare.

She calls it Turnip Murder. Veggies have never seemed so deadly.
